Aloha Friday #19

In Hawaii, Aloha Friday is the day that we take it easy and look forward to the weekend. So I thought that on Fridays I would take it easy on posting, too. Therefore, I’ll ask a simple question for you to answer. Nothing that requires a lengthy response. If you’d like to participate, just post your own question on your blog and leave your link at An Island Life – The home of Aloha Friday. Don’t forget to visit the other participants! It’s a great way to make new bloggy friends!
My Question:
Do you have any tips for new moms?

My Answer:
As of right now, no real (experienced) tips. I'm due in August, so I'd love to hear any (and all) tips!!

  1. The only one I can think of is don't tiptoe around the house when the baby is sleeping. A baby needs to learn to sleep in all conditions. I'm not saying talk loud or play loud music, but go about your day like you normally would before the baby was born. If you start out having a completely quiet house, then more than likely you'll have to keep it that way.

I've watched several of my friends and family attempt the tiptoe method, and most of them regret it. I've had some friends that would tell you not to call, ring the door bell, knock on the door, run water...

  4. I'm a mom to four kids (ages 10, 12, 14, 18). Besides getting plenty of rest as a new mom, my other advice is to just cherish it - it goes by so quickly. Don't worry so much if you have dishes in the sink or laundry in the basket - enjoy and play with your child every second you can. As far as some practical advice, I always kept a small, stocked diaper bag in my car. Then, if I went off and forgot something, I would have a backup with me in the car.

    Good luck!

  5. I echo the sentiments of the comments above me - don't sweat the small stuff, go about your daily routine without tiptoeing and making it too quiet, keep an 'emergency' diaper bag in the car at all times, and absolutely enjoy each and every little moment - because the time flies by way too fast! In other words, try not to blink! ;)

  6. Congratulations :)

Maybe a few that I've learned with experience.

    1. Always remember to eat. You aren't just feeding the baby, you are also feeding you and most of what you eat will go to make milk for the baby, so you need extra for you. (if you will be breastfeeding that is)

    2. Sleep with the baby. That way you aren't all strung out. Baby sleeps, you sleep too. Even if you have to take 15 mins to do some chores quickly, only do what's important and go sleep!!

    3. Oh and sleeping with baby beside you in a bassinet is a Godsend! In the night, you just reach over and pick them up, nurse them and put them back.

    4. Take bunches of photos. Oh they change so quickly.

    5. Does your church do meals for mom? Or do you have families who offer to help? Let them bring over food and put it in the freezer. You need lots of cooked meals.

    6. Anyone ask what gifts you want? Tell them diapers and more diapers and gift card for diapers :) (unless you are cloth diapering)

7 . If anyone ask what help you want. Oh grab it. You need help to cook, light cleaning, change baby or maybe a feeding (if you will use bottle) So you can get out and away just for a little bit. Venturing out on your own before doing it with baby will make it alot easier.

    8. I agree with commenter #1 Do not tiptoe. shhhhing anyone around the home when baby is sleeping. bang the pots. I promise, if they really want to sleep. they'll sleep. You will not be able to wake them!!

    9. call the doc before rushing the baby in to ER (unless it's absolutely necessary) Chances are you already know what to do.

    10. Most important. Follow your instincts as a mom!

    Gosh was that overload? :)

  9. All I can say is get lots of sleep now. It will be awhile before you will be sleeping through the night (like years).

  10. Get all the sleep you can right now. And don't stress on being quiet when they come home, they need to learn to sleep through noises!

  11. If at all possible, don't work until they start school. Once they do, they're not "yours" anymore. Plus, you won't miss anything.

If not working isn't an option, make sure you get as much bonding time as possible. And take lots of pictures and videos.

  12. My biggest tip is to take it one day at a time. Each child is different, so learn things as you go, and remember we all make mistakes. Kids are rgeat and go with the flow. Cherish your moments together because they do grow up too quickly.

  13. Let your baby be. My uncle and his wife have hounded their child since he was born and he still can't walk, eat solid food, etc. They keep him in a room with no furniture so he can't pull himself up. My uncle thought he would choke when he first started showing interest in solid food and would pull it out of his mouth. (He is 14 months old!)
